The battle for e-reader supremacy is a constant tug of war. The two main e-reader contenders are the Nook and Kindle. And with the new Nook with Glowlight, Barnes & Noble now sells the best one yet. All of that could change. Reuters believes Amazon is readying its own front-it Kindle e-reader.

Selling lots of Kindles is great for Amazon not because they want to make money selling Kindles, but because they want to make money selling Kindle books. So much so that they take a $5 loss on every cheapo Kindle sold.

If you opt for the cheaper version of Amazon's Kindles, the ones with "special offers," your screensavers will be advertisements. But if you ever decide you're sick of them, Amazon will now let you buy your way out.

Amazon's on a roll today, announcing a new touchscreen Kindle as well as a color Kindle Fire tablet, but if you're a cheapskate, the sweetest announcement is definitely the new $79 Kindle.
