Yheu-Shen Chua won third place in the 2011 Skyscraper Competition for this take on the Hoover Dam. The design incorporates the viewing platform, bridge and gallery into one structure, including a vertical aquarium to show off the 700-foot drop into the Black Canyon.

Move over Sydney…after 7 years of construction, the Guangzhou Opera House is now complete. Zaha Hadid's spectacular design integrates two separate buildings and the surrounding Pearl River. Considered the cultural center of Guangzhou, the opera house is a dazzling feat of modern design.
 
Here's a lovely shot of sea ice surrounding the island of Shikotan, one of the largest in the chain of Kuril Islands stretching from northern Japan to the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. This quick-forming ice was captured by NASA's Earth Observing-1 satellite and carved into swirling patterns by strong winds.
