We called the projection telephone the "dying whimper of the landline," and it doesn't look like it made much of a splash. According to a recent survey, 35.8 percent of American homes don't have a landline in them. As our math-whiz-readers will note, that's more than 1/3 of American without a landline.

The survey, which was part of the National Health Interview Survey that is conducted by the Center for Disease Control, shows a trend that seems pretty obvious. With the proliferation of cell phones, there isn't too much incentive to get a landline.

The trend is strongest amongst young people, as more than 40 percent of 18-and-unders don't have a landline. Taking into account that this number is likely skewed by those living with their parents, it's a safe assumption that more than 40 percent living alone have gotten rid of their landlines. Or, more likely, never gotten on in the first place.

It's only a matter of time before landlines disappear for good, it seems. Does it matter? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
