YouTube app update turns your Android device into a TV remote

Connecting our content and cloud-based services to the various devices throughout our home and office environments has become increasingly complicated. Now Google has significantly simplified at least one aspect of seamless cross-device content consumption via YouTube.

The latest update to the YouTube app allows you to automatically send a video on your phone or tablet to an Android device or Google TV sharing the same Wi-Fi connection, essentially giving you a remote control for YouTube's vast library of video content. In addition to instant streaming to your networked devices, the update also allows you to search for other videos or surf the Web on your device while the video plays on your television or external Android device.

For cord-cutters, this "lean back" option effectively blurs the line between traditional television and the new world of cloud-based video content. At present the update is only available for Android devices.
