Angry Birds Star Wars pulls iconic characters into game's universe

Star Wars fans have suffered a number of tiny indignities over the years including everything from Jedi Knight-endorsed ramen to Yoda cameos in the service of UK phone companies. But a new Star Wars mash-up could be a welcome surprise for fans of the Angry Birds franchise.

Angry Birds Star Wars is a new version of the game that takes the space opera universe created by George Lucas and layers it on top of the video game in a way that is surprisingly faithful to the source material. Not only did Rovio manage to snag the rights to use footage from the actual Star Wars movies to promote the game, but in an extended trailer we get to see an Angry Birds version of the shady alien bar on the planet Tatooine. The Star Wars treatment is thorough, including storm troopers, light sabers, and even Darth Vader.

The game is being released today on iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac platforms. You can check out a promotional scene that shows Han Solo and Obi-Wan Kenobi coming upon what "looks" like the Death Star in the video below.
