Redesigned street light tells you how long the wait is

One small innovation can make a big difference. Here, designer Chang-Chi Shih is rethinking the street light so that it works a little harder.

With street lights moving away from one big bulb to a bunch of smaller LED lights, there's now more real estate for information beyond a green or red light. As seen above, that's a space a designer can be creative in. Imagine if a street light told commuters how much time was left until it turned green, rather than have them rev and inch and grip the wheel until their knuckles go white.

Shih put the design together for the iF Design Talents competition.
