In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Web has been awash with photos of New Yorkers huddled around Starbucks locations hoping to snag free wireless service or a power outlet. Now, in a move unrelated to the disasters, Starbucks is further acknowledging its role as a community hub, by testing a new wireless charging solution in Boston.
The wireless charging panels are called Duracell Powermats, and they allow users to charge up by simply placing their devices on a tiny black circle embedded in Starbucks countertops. The initiative is part of the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), an effort by led by AT&T, Duracell, Starbucks, Powermat Technologies and Procter & Gamble (the parent company of Duracell) to create an open standard for smart wireless power.
With regards to the Boston area testing of the tabletop charging spots, Brotman told the Boston Globe, "We're building the Powermat technology into some of the tabletops, just to get a sense for how our customers will react, compared to having to plug their mobile devices into the wall."
Earlier this year, Duracell ramped up its promotion of the Powermat technology by adding rapper Jay-Z to the fold. The rapper appeared in a slick video spot that showed off the real-world applications of the product in everyday settings. You can check out the Jay-Z Duracell spot in the video below.
