Portable power desk lets you take your computing off the grid

For those of us who use technology as an essential part of our daily working lives, the notion of going "off the grid" can seem as scary as it is impractical. But a new portable desk offers a solution that could literally let you fire up your laptop from the top of Mt. Everest.

The Kanz Field Power Desk is a portable desk unit with integrated power packs that offer six hours of battery life, solar panels for recharging, and a wide array of adapters and ports designed to support a large number of electronic devices. Of course, in the age of the Internet, the power solution only takes care of one part of an off-grid solution, so Kanz also offers an optional Satellite Broadband Internet IP terminal that fits seamlessly into the Field Power Desk's framework. The attachment offers connection speeds of up to 464 kilobits per second and built-in multi-user Wi-Fi access.

Dust resistant and housed in a durable traveling case, the Field Power Desk is available for $2495, and the additional satellite connection attachment costs a cool $2850. Sure, the prices sound (and pretty much are) prohibitive, until you consider that for about the price of a feature-maxed-out Retina MacBook Pro you could have the ultimate portable apocalypse-proof workstation.
