Gottfrid Svartholm is known for two things. The first is founding The Pirate Bay, one of the most prominent torrent sites out there. The second is fleeing Switzerland and failing to serve a twelve-month sentence received for the first thing he's known for. Thursday, Svartholm was arrested in Cambodia.
Svartholm, 27 years old, was arrested in his apartment above the Cadillac Bar in Phnom Pehn, the capital of Cambodia. His lawyer, Ola Salomonsson, says the arrest might be related to The Pirate Bay case, but nothing has been officially announced. Though he has been wanted internationally for avoiding his jail sentence in Sweden.
He had made an appeal on The Pirate Bay case in Sweden but was too sick to leave Cambodia for the first appeal hearing. He had the correct documentation for that hearing, but he then missed a second one and didn't have any documentation. Thus, the Court of Appeal upheld the original yearlong jail sentence and $1.1 million fine.
Moral of the story, kids? Don't create enormous torrent sites, I guess. Unless Cambodian/Swedish prison is your idea of a good time.
