How do you make a point when a major distribution network won't broadcast your shows? Why you launch a full-scale zombie attack, of course. That's the strategy AMC employed recently on the streets of New York.
The mock zombie invasion was meant to bring attention to the fact that viewers can no longer see AMC shows like The Walking Dead (as well as Breaking Bad and Mad Men) via the Dish Network. The reasons behind the blackout of AMC shows on the Dish network are complicated but they essentially boil down to disagreements surrounding revenue and the new world of online television streaming operating alongside traditional cable distribution.
Hoping to inspire Dish customers to demand the return of AMC, the cable channel cooked up the realistic zombie attack that even featured one undead guy dragging a Dish device along the city streets. It's doubtful that this will inspire a mass call-in to Dish from customers, but scaring hapless, supposedly super jaded New Yorkers with realistic zombies is certainly a fun way to bring attention to AMC's side of the argument.
