Fridge lock alerts your social network about diet slips

It's always late at night when you are alone that your refrigerator looms large — calling you to finish that slice or two of pizza. If only there were someone to talk you out of it, right? Now, you can rely on your social network and a little positive peer pressure to talk you out of it.

The Virtual Fridge Lock is a magnet that attaches to your refrigerator and should you open the fridge for an unadvisable midnight snack it wirelessly alerts your social network. Soon, your phone should be buzzing with messages from your friends either supportively talking you off that dietary ledge or threatening to kick your ass for slipping up.

Of course it is all based on the honor system — you could tell your friends you were just thinking about it and go ahead with a piece of pie. But, if you've got the device — which is distributed by Meta Real, a diet reeducation program — you're serious about trying to shedding some pounds and you'll find the virtual support to be helpful.

JWT of São Paulo, Brazil created the Virtual Fridge Lock for the Meta Real program, and clients receive it when they sign up. Even though it sounds like a marketing ploy, there is some thought behind the device as research shows that those trying to lose weight do better with a support network or buddy.

Bottom line, the Virtual Fridge Lock is a good way to get program members to think twice before they have a slip up. There's nothing like being publicly outed in front of your friends on Facebook to keep you on the straight and narrow path to losing weight!
