Finally, an air conditioner you can control with your phone

Most window air conditioners are about as high-tech as a 1973 Chevy Malibu, but Friedrich wants to change that with their high-end Kühl line. Their latest trick is a Wi-Fi dongle that lets you control the air conditioner from anywhere.

Most air conditioners are bought strictly on a BTU per dollar basis, but Friedrich has tried to buck that temptation with a better built and more stylish product line called Kühl. Costing around 2-3 times as much as a run of the mill a/c unit, the Kühl's have been a tough sell to all but the most style conscious apartment dwellers, but now there's a feature that may even get me to take notice.

The FriedrichLink Wi-Fi adapter can be added to any existing Kühl air conditioner, and will allow you to control the temperature, power, and set up a cooling schedule using an iPhone app. This is perfect if you're coming home early on a steamy hot day, and want to get things chilled down before you arrive.

Pricing and availability have not yet been announced, nor is there any word of an Android or Windows version of the app. Regular Kühls without the Wi-Fi link start at around $600 for a 5400-btu unit.
