Within the next year, Verizon Wireless will introduce the first text-to-911 service that will do exactly what it sounds like: allow customers to request help from a 911 call center via text messages. Somewhat shockingly, this will be the first text-to-911 service in the United States. Sadly, it only notifies the emergency services, not local superheroes.
Though the service is particularly geared toward the hearing-impaired, it will incredibly useful for someone who has poor reception or finds himself in a situation in which speaking would not be prudent.
The UK already has a service like this in place, called EmergencySMS service, but that is specifically designed for the hearing-impaired.
Verizon plans to roll out the service in a few major metropolitan areas within the first six months of 2013, and an FCC chairman announced last year that the country's emergency systems will be upgraded to accept text messages.
