With all the talk about the Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles, little has been unearthed about Nintendo's upcoming Wii U. Originally believed to be more powerful than a PS3 and Xbox 360, reports from developers now suggest that Wii U games might not be as pretty as current-gen graphics.
According to GamesIndustry.biz:
"No, it's not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360," said one developer who's been working with the Wii U. What does that mean? "The graphics are just not as powerful," reiterated the source.
This developer is not alone in their opinion. Another developer at a major company confirmed this point of view. "Yeah, that's true. It doesn't produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360," said the source. "There aren't as many shaders, it's not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can't quite keep up."
This runs contradictory to the early reports about the Wii U being 50 percent more powerful than a PS3 or Xbox 360.
The Wii U is on track to be launched this fall.
Wii U claims that the Wii U might launch on Sunday, November 18 in North America and a week later in Japan. The Wii U fan blog notes that the timing for that date is similar to that of the Wii's November 16, 2006 launch, which was also a Sunday.
Wii U also previously reported that the Wii U will run on a 3GHz quad-core Power PC, sport an AMD GPU and have "embedded" DRAM that could make the consoles graphics 10 times more impressive than the Xbox 360.
Who's telling the truth? We won't know for sure until Nintendo shows off the finalized Wii U design and tablet controller at E3 in June.
Are slightly less detailed graphics a turnoff for you? Does it matter, especially since the Wii U's gem will be NFC-enabled tablet controller? Nintendo's likely betting against getting locked up in a graphics race again.
