China is now the #1 country for new smartphone activations

Everybody knows that most of the smartphones we buy are made in China, but now it turns out that more of them are being bought in China than in the U.S.

Just over a year ago China was only the world's 10th biggest buyer of smartphones, so to jump all the way to #1 show how much the emerging Chinese middle class is clamoring to get their hands on the latest phone du jour.

This graph covers only IOS and Android phones, so the results might be a bit different if you added in Windows and BlackBerry. Still, the Chinese growth rate is pretty remarkable.

With the U.S. and China accounting for 45 percent of new IOS and Android smartphone activations, I guess there must still be a lot of Europeans buying a bunch of Nokias.
