New app brings Mars directly to your smartphone

One look at the millions of apps out there we're pretty sure that we've covered just about everything there is on this planet, so why not have an app bringing you something from another one…namely Mars.

The Mars Images app takes images from NASA's Opportunity rover via the latest downlink and sends them to your phone as soon as available. You can also browse images from the rover's archive.

The out-of-this-world app is free and available for both iPhone/iPad and Android phones.

The Opportunity rover has been on Mars since 2004 — long past its due date — but it still keeps making discoveries such as clear evidence water once flowed on the Martian surface. This is what makes the app so exciting — who knows what the latest pictures, now sent to your phone, will show!

Computer scientist Mark Powell, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, developed the Mars Images app. NASA will also be adding the image archive from the now defunct Spirit rover , the Opportunity's twin.

The agency is also looking to release a similar app for the Mars Science Laboratory, once it lands and starts sending back photos in August.
