Hydrogen-powered boat creates its own fuel as it goes

We love water toys with interesting propulsion systems, and the new MIG 675 cruiser will certainly fit the bill. It will reportedly produce its own fuel by using an onboard generator to harvest hydrogen directly from the seawater itself.

The website for the MIG 675 boasts an onboard generator that will provide for live hydrogen production, which means there are no risky, unstable hydrogen tanks to worry about. The hydrogen will power a 500 horsepower engine that is reported to propel the 22-foot-long, 2,866-pound aluminum-hulled watercraft up to 70 mph.

In addition to providing a unique source of power the hydrogen engine is eco-friendly. There are no emissions, just water vapor. Well, eco-friendly on paper, at least.

Quimperié, the French based entity that produces the MIG 675 doesn't elaborate on exactly how hydrogen system works. That leaves questions such as whether it can run indefinitely on seawater, or whether other fuels may be needed to boost the hydrogen production, which would render all that true eco-friendliness moot, too.

But enough of the tough questions! What about the fruit?

The hydrogen generator will also power all onboard electrical devices, which includes an electric anchor roller, a 10-inch touchscreen controller, GPS, depth finder, rear-view camera, an Alpine audio system, a bar fridge with an electric retractable table, and an LED navigation lighting system. All devices are operated via touch controls.

Other luxury features of the MIG 675 include a retractable shower, toilet, leather interior, sun deck, and teak floor.

The MIG 675 is reported to hit the market next year, but brace yourselves. A tricked out boat like this doesn't come cheap regardless of the fuel system; the price tag is estimated to be over $325,000.
