1. Felt Robot Pattern Whatâs better than a robot? A robot that you can hug and take a nap on. If you can sew and know someone who needs their very own robot to love, this is for you. The patternâs available on Etsy for $5.99.
2. Bat Lamp Pretty much everyone can benefit from owning their very own Bat signal, especially one that doubles as a lamp. Youâre going to need a CAD program and some form of electronics to control it, but if thatâs all in a dayâs work for you, the pattern can be found here.
3. Car Kit Donât be confused by the original creatorâs statement that this is a Fatherâs Day present. Certainly it could be, but the possibilities are really endless. If you know someone whose car breaks down all the time, why wouldnât they want (and need) a car kit with a superhero decal on the outside? But the patternâs for the kit bag, so you could stick anything you wanted in it. And your design can be anything. Pick your recipientâs favorite fandom and youâll be good to go. Pattern here.
4. Video Game Cross-Stitch If youâre a cross-stitcher, get thee to Sprite Stitch, a website dedicated to the art of replicating video game art with embroidery floss. Their forums have a wide selection of patterns and project ideas so you can give your favorite gamer something that theyâll appreciate. Read more here.
5. Lego Ornaments Legos make everything awesome. You can build everything with them, including, it seems, Christmas ornaments — Death Stars and Millennium Falcons. Photographer Chris McVeigh has a bunch of geeky designs ready to go, and his website has part lists and instructions for each one. He recommends buying the legos specifically for the designs, but we think that probably depends on how many you just have sitting around. Read more here.
6. Knitted Space Invader Socks Almost everyone wears socks. Therefore, socks are generally a good present, assuming they are awesome socks. These are awesome, and if you possess knitting skills, you too can gift your friends socks with space invaders on them. They are relentless and getting ever closer. Pattern can be found here.
7. Mobius Scarf Mobius strips are mind blowing. They never end, and they only have one side! So your more math-minded friends will be intrigued by the Mobius Scarf. Not only does it defy three-dimensional space, but it keeps your neck warm in the process. Pattern is available here.
8. Retro Nintendo DS Case A lot of people own some sort of portable gaming device these days. If youâve got a Nintendo fanboy/girl on your list, why not make them this retro DS case? Because nothing says Nintendo love like sticking your new Nintendo device in something that looks like an old Nintendo device. Pattern is available here.
9. Make Your Own Clock This is the best idea of all time. Using a handy tutorial, you can make a clock of out basically anything. Anything you can drill a hole through, which, I would argue, is just about everything. Who knew it was so easy to make something so awesome? Everyone I know is getting a clock this year. 10. Mario Mushroom Sometimes, a pick-me-up is needed, and what better way to cheer up a friend or relation by giving them their very own 1-UP mushroom? This crochet pattern will allow you to create whatever Mario mushroom you feel a recipient may need most in their lives. Find out more here.
16. Rubiks Cube Cake Sometimes your potential gift recipients donât need or want anything that might clutter up their lives. 11. NES Controller USB Stick Alternately, you can also apparently make a USB stick out of just about anything. Here are some instructions for creating your own out of an old Nintendo controller. 13. LED Tie For the more electronically minded among you, here is a LED tie you can make. Itâs simple, requires only a little work, and you can make dad the talk of the company Christmas party (at least until someone gets drunk and does something truly embarrassing). Read all about it on Evil Mad Scientist, the DIY-crazed laboratory of Windell Oskay.
14. Timer Chip Footstool If you have someone in your life that loves chips and youâre not half bad with a wood saw, you might make this footstool. Itâll be unique, speak to their interests, and is kind of adorable even if you donât have any idea what a timer chip does. This one is also from Evil Mad Scientist.
15. NES Coffee Table If you have a lot of time and want to be remembered as the best friend/sibling/cousin/whatever ever, you can attempt this coffee table. Not only does it look like a giant NES controller, but it IS a giant NES controller. Admittedly useful if youâve turned all your real NES controllers into other projects on this list. Read more here.
