The Avengers does not have footage shot with an iPhone (updated!)
UPDATE: It seems that Seamus McGarvey's words were taken out of context. Disney and McGarvey have confirmed that no footage from The Avengers was actually shot with an iPhone of any kind. Awww...
Dang, we knew the iPhone 4 and 4S's cameras were good, but who knew it was good enough to shoot portions of next summer's Marvel blockbuster The Avengers? Apparently, there's some footage shot with an iPhone in the movie and in the trailer!
Seamus McGarvey, director of photography for The Avengers revealed in a recent interview that a few scenes were filmed with an iPhone. He didn't go into specifics to say which model he used, but it's at least the 720p HD-capable iPhone 4. If they managed to get an iPhone 4S ahead of time, even better!
On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.
Spiffy. Now comes the hard part. Which part of the trailer was shot with the iPhone? We've included the latest trailer for The Avengers below. Turn that HD all the way up and start dissecting, because I've watched twice and I still can't decide which scene was shot with a smartphone.
