Scientists tear 3D virus molecules apart using augmented reality

Fans of the Iron Man movies will remember the amazing scenes of Tony Stark manipulating a holographic interface as he discovers the element vibranium. Now a real lab has concocted a similar method of studying molecules using augmented reality.

Arthur Olsen's Molecular Graphics Lab at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California has combined 3D printing of virus segments with strategically placed webcam targets to innovate the practice of virus research. The augmented reality-powered combination allows for a better understanding of how the components interact and thus yields better solutions for drug remedies.
