Amazon puts 31 Verizon phones on sale for a penny, includes Bionic
If the pre-order frenzy inspired by the iPhone 4S has you wanting an upgrade, Amazon is looking to distract you from Apple's wiles. In true Amazonian fashion, the online retailer is doing a damn good job of it, too. These aren't obscure, unwanted Android phones, either — some of the latest and greatest made the list.
Motorola's Droid Bionic, HTC's Thunderbolt and Incredible 2 and Samsung's Droid Charge — all fine, expensive devices — are among the 31 phones that Amazon only wants a penny for. There's even a recent Windows Phone in the HTC Trophy, and a BlackBerry or two, if you're into that.
It all seems fine and dandy save for one catch: this deal is only eligible with "new activations." In other words, if you're grandfathered into an all-you-can-eat data plan with Verizon, you'll have to give that up if you trade up. If you're a new customer, though, you'll never know the difference.
Update: Amazon replied and confirmed that you need a new line of services (so a new phone or a new contract) to take advantage of the deal. This won't really mattered unless you have an unlimited data plan you're looking to hold on to. Even then, if you're not due for an upgrade, you're saving some money by spending only a penny on some of these phones.
