Punctures are a real problem for anyone who rides a bike in the city, but not with this crazy looking bicycle that replaces the conventional wheels and tires with flexible wheels made from bent strips of tempered steel.
The bike was built by designer Ron Arad for the Elton John Aids Foundation, and will be auctioned off at the end of October during an event called WOW Bikes in London. In the meantime, any guest staying at the W Hotel in London's Leicester Square can take it out for a spin.
Arad's director of design Marcus Hearst says that the compliant steel strips cushion the ride, making the bike surprisingly comfortable to ride. My main concern is how you would get any grip with no rubber between the slippery steel and the road.
In many ways this reminds me of those airless tires being tested by the military.
