Was this photo of tasty sushi taken by iPhone 5's 8MP cam?

The iPhone 5 is going to be officially unveiled any day now. ANY DAY NOW. Rumor has it the delicious looking plate of sushi you see above is a photo captured from a real iPhone 5. If so, then the iPhone 5 might get a megapixel boost.

In case you're not up to snuff with your iPhone tech specs, here are the basics: the iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera. The iPhone 5 is rumored to get an 8-megapixel camera. The sushi photo above is alleged to have been cropped down from a 8-megapixel photo to a 5-megapixel one (possibly to cover things up).

Add on the "evidence" that the image's GPS coordinates hail from Apple's 1 Infinite Loop HQ and things start to get interesting.

But things get strange. Based on analysis from its EXIF data (that's embedded data in a digital photo), the photo claims it was taken with an iPhone 4. As TechCrunch notes, EXIF data can easily be altered. It could also be that the photo was taken with a prototype iPhone 5 disguised as an iPhone 4. Apple's secretive like that.

It's rumored that Apple will announce two iPhones in the coming weeks — one budget iPhone 4S and one radically different iPhone 5. The iPhone 4S is expected to retain the shape of the current iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5 is rumored to be getting a larger screen in a taller, wider, but thinner body.

Whether the pic is legit or not, I seem to be very hungry for some sushi now. Thanks Apple, thanks!

UPDATE: It seems a ThisIsMyNext reader did some warping and unbending of the plate and got this:

It looks like somebody's hands holding an iPhone to take the pic. What do you think?
