Those scientific geniuses over at Boston Dynamics are at it again with their crazy quadruped robots, and this time it's better than ever. The new "AlphaDog" 'bot can carry 400 pounds for 20 miles over 24 hours without keeling over and robo-dying. Take that, real dogs!
AlphaDog's not the first quadruped we've talked about before. The U.S. Army apparently had a huge one back in the 1960s, but it fizzled out and now sits in the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at For Eustis.
On the other hand, Boston Dynamics' four-legged robot can actually take physical blows by a bunch of dudes and not flip over. Using GPS navigation and computer vision, AlphaDog can traverse just about any terrain. Don't take my word for it, just watch the video below to see how nimble it is.
In collaboration with DARPA, Boston Dynamics hopes to have the AlphaDog ready for field testing by 2012. One suggestion: maybe make it look less like a menacing killer robot sent to kill us all.
