Spooky robotic ball will do your bidding via smartphone

We are all learning to control our televisions and computers with our smartphones, so why not robots? A team of developers has done just that by introducing a ball that can be manipulated via iPhone or Android device.

The Sphero is controlled using a Bluetooth signal and features an omni-directional drive, and the developers offer an open API for those who want to get creative with the device. The company, Orbotix, has plans to develop various apps for the ball including an augmented reality game. The ball is scheduled to go on sale via mobile vendors sometime toward the end of 2011.
