Scientists have created a brain implant that has helped rats increase their memory function, paving the way for similar implants to help out people with memory-impairing brain injuries.
This is the first time ever that an implant has mimicked the firing patters of neurons and shown improved cognitive function. While we're a ways off from this actually being tested in humans, it's a pretty staggering proof of concept.
Of course, I'm holding out for the brain implant that will make me smarter and more clever. Memory is great, but what's the fun of just remembering that you're not that smart? Let's dream big, science.
