Telepresence robot blimp sends your real-world avatar anywhere

Some of the most amazing innovations often turn out to be the simplest, as exampled by this new twist on telepresence robots that uses mini-blimps to effectively give you a completely mobile avatar in the real world.

Developed by Tobita Hiroaki and the team at the Sony Computer Science Laboratories, the helium-filled floating balloon projects the live image of the transmitter while moving through real space via small remote-controlled propellers situated beneath the balloon. Although the invention looks a bit creepy at first, this is probably the closest someone has come to an immediately usable (and seemingly affordable) mobile telepresence avatar to date.
