Japanese apartment takes the whole loft bed idea and flips it

If you live in a tiny apartment, you know that one way to save space is to combine sleep and work areas by using a loft bed. This Japanese family of six came up with a different way, keeping the sleeping areas at floor level, but moving some of the work and play areas up above the beds.

Created by the architectural studio MihaDesign, the 770 square foot space was divided into two main areas by two huge boxes. One box has the parents' bed down below and a play area for the kids up above, while the other has the kids' beds below and study areas above. One cool thing is that when you're working at your desk, your feet are actually dangling right over your bed, so I guess it's a good thing that Japanese people typically don't wear shoes at home.

Check out the gallery to see how they managed to fit so many people and things into such a tiny space.
