17 standing desks that will help you live longer
Sitting at a desk all day staring at computer or shuffling papers might sound like a familiar routine for many (including us bloggers), but did you know it could increase your chance of dying early by 20 percent (if you're a male) and up to 40 percent (if you're a female)? Yep, sitting is actually bad for your health, even if parking your behind in $8,000 god-chair feels really good.
We've got 17 stand-up desks and workstations that'll keep your posture straight and possibly keep you alive longer, ranging from the professionally made, weekend DIY projects and even, erm, "homemade" solutions. Click into the gallery below to get started.

3. Laptop Tower LT by Ursula Maier There are stand-up desks that look like stand-up desks and then there's the Laptop Tower LT — a stand-up desk outfitted to look like an inconspicuous file cabinet. A compartment slides out unveiling your laptop. Another plate slides out for a mouse. A third drawer opens up to store a printer or a projector. Even better is its single electrical cable is transparent, further disguising your blocky tower as a piece of Mad Men-ish furniture and less a like a workstation.
4. Connect-A-Desk Laptop Holder Who needs to stand around in front of a stationary desk when you can work while on the go. Simply strap on your Connect-A-Desk around your neck, slip your laptop (it supposedly fits any) on it and get typing. Sure, you'll look like a total goof ball using this instead of just holding an iPad in your hand, but at least you'll look like an expert.
8. Hacked Wooden Ikea Stand-up Desk There's a lot to of legroom to build your own standing rig. John Knox hacked together a few Vika Artur trestles with shelves from Ikea, mounted a few more wooden boards and made his very own custom standing desk. Arguably the best part about designing your own table is it allows you to add exactly what you need (like a spot for your mug and landline phone) and cut down on the stuff you don't need, like extraneous drawers and sliding keyboard mounts.
10. Mini-Stepper Desk Another exercise/standing desk mashup, but instead of a treadmill, it throws in a mini-stepper exercise machine. We're not too sure on how many people could actually work while constantly bobbing up and down as the pressure spreads into their legs, but hey, if it can kill two birds with one stone, we're all for it! Fine calves and fine work? Yes, please!
11. Iron Board Stand-up Desk Nothing wrong with repurposing home gear for work. Brent Hardinge isn't afraid of working on his iron board. Depending on the length, there's plenty of space to keep a lamp, a few files and other doohickeys on the side. Bonus: tuck it away when you're not using your desk.
12. Adjustable Standing Desk Going barebones really seems to be the way to go. This adjustable standing desk by Chris Pollock uses a few aluminum pipes and clamps to create a cross standing desk. It's as simple as that. On one end is a board for a laptop and on the other end is room for dangling his headphones. As you can see, this design works exceptionally well in spaces with low floor to ceiling height, such as an attic.
14. Drafting Table Standing desks aren't just for people who use computers. Draftsmen can take advantage of standing up as well. Built with engineers, artists and architects in mind, these custom drafting tables have nine adjustable heights to fit any writing, drawing and painting style. As its surface angles upwards, the desk reveals a huge drawer for storing supplies. With a plethora of woods to choose from such as quarter sawn oak and brown maple, finding one that meshes with your home decor shouldn't be too hard.
1. Sit to Walkstation Sometimes there just isn't enough time in a day to squeeze in everything, like writing up that report for your boss and hitting the gym. Eating all those take-out lunches can add on the pounds, too. The Sit to Walkstation addresses this with a built-in treadmill for hardcore multi-taskers who want to stay in shape and burn calories even while "in the office." You'll look a little goofy, sure, but you'll be the only one laughing while everyone catches their breath walking up three flights of stairs.
2. Rain Design iGo Standing Desk for iMac Love Apple's iMacs? After all, an all-in-one computer deserves an all-in-one stand, right? With adjustable legs, a rotatable disc to easily spin the iMac around for easy access to rear ports, a hub for an iPod, cable compartment for hiding tangly cables, the iGo is the perfect minimalist table for an equally minimal computer. Heck, the iGo even comes with gel-filled wrist guards for your keyboard and two built-in holders for speakers or coffee cups. How awesome is that?
5. Cantilevered Stand-Up Desk Not all desks need to be high-tech office fixtures. The Cantilevered Stand-up Desk by Etsy seller "dniceboater" shaves off any unnecessaries, pairing it down to a board for your laptop, another board for a book/magazine/notes and an arm with a cup holder. Its simplistic design will allow users to focus on work and less on getting distracted. Want that special touch? These "desks" are custom built. Should you require more extensions, "dniceboater" can accommodate custom orders, apparently.
6. DIY Stand-up Desk This here is Instructables founder Eric Wilhelm's desk. Before he used slabs of wood and other materials he had lying around in his home, he measured the optimal height for his desk with textbooks, cardboard boxes and milk crates. Hell, why not just leave it like that? It'd be a bit messy, but man is it cheap to find the supplies and put together your own DIY stand-up desk. A few twisty-ties to manage the unruly cables would spiff this set up in an instant.
7. The Junk Stand-up DeskYou don't need to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars buying a sweet desk. Similar to Eric Wilhelm's desk, this DIY stander by Flickr user "Swirlee" is just a bunch of boxes and storage bins stacked on top of a little stand. It won't win any beauty awards, but it does the job. When you're ready for a change, simply rearrange the "junk" to suit your mood.
9. Closet Cabinet Desk Don't have a private home office, but still want to keep the house tidy for when friends come over? Try using a setup like this one by Flickr user "kraemer." His entire "office" is housed inside of this closet cabinet. Opening it up, you'll find all the necessities: room for a laptop, shredder, trash bin, iPod sound dock, office supplies, calendar and cork board all at your command. It's like a treasure chest — for work.
13. Electric Height Adjustable Desk Why should your adjustable chair get all the height-changing fun? The electric height desk works basically the same — it slides up and it slides down without any strain on you. Couldn't be easier.
15. Executive Desk Even executives want to live longer and healthier lives. Made by the same guys who make the standing drafting table, this standing executive desk can be crafted in seven different types of woods, set with six different types of leather inlays and has enough drawers to stash goodies in. Fitted suit not required — but it probably helps complete the image.
16. Cardboard Box Desk There's a fine line between being cheap and being lazy. This one is the latter, but you've still got to respect it. While not as "customizable" as the DIY solution, using spare cardboard boxes and just placing your laptop and morning coffee on top is hands-down the fastest and easiest way to cobble together a stand-up desk. Just be careful for roaches — they love cardboard.
17. Standing Desk with Dual Monitors Not all DIY standing desks need to be fancy to look good. Flickr user "RawPhil" really just has a single slab of wood tucked into a fortuitously perfect wall nook, but the end result is clean and chic. He also gets double points from us for having two monitors up there. You'd be hard pressed to come up with a better looking desk space.
