Russian doll combines sci-fi sounds with old world magic

If you somehow happened upon a Japanese woman in a black evening dress wearing a stethoscope as she waved her hands dramatically over a wooden doll you'd probably be excused for running in the other direction. But in this case, such a sight would simply be a musical demonstration of the amazing Matryomin device.

Created in 2000 by Masami Takeuchi, the musical instrument takes the functions of a theremin and combines them with the old world charm of a Russian matryoshka doll. While the sound of the theremin has always been hauntingly sci-fi-ish, the Matryomin device finally adds a bit of magic and mystery the theremin always somehow lacked. You can see the group Mable playing a sort of Matryomin orchestra in the video below.
