Panasonic's Jungle handheld gets canned before it embarrassed itself
Remember anything at all about Panasonic's planned "Jungle" handheld? Don't have a clue what I'm talking about? Well, you won't need to care anymore because Panasonic's gone ahead and canceled the Linux-powered and MMO-focused handheld.
Citing "changes in the market and in our own strategic direction," Panasonic is basically saying that with the release of the Nintendo 3DS and Sony NGP this year, there really isn't any room for a Linux-powered handheld that only plays MMO games.
Back in October, we actually said that the Jungle had a glimmer of hope in facing immediate extinction because it was targeting PC gamers who just wanted to go mobile. In five months, we've seen Razer's much prettier Switchblade debut at CES 2011, Sony announce the quad-core NGP and Nintendo's own 3DS completely sell out in Japan within 24 hours.
Smart move Panasonic. The Jungle would have been squeezed out sooner or later.
