Meal Assistance Robot ready to feed Japan's elderly via voice command

As Japan gets back to normal, the problem of finding enough people to care for the elderly remains, which makes Isao Wakabayashi's invention a timely and much needed salve for the country's aged populace.

The Meal Assistance System combines the hardware of the Rascal Robot arm set from Robix with Wakabayashi's own image processing software to automatically recognize meal items and respond by feeding the subject when given a voice command. Of course the system is still slow in execution, but this is a great start. You can view the system in action in the video below.
