Image of the Day: sea ice from space

Here's a lovely shot of sea ice surrounding the island of Shikotan, one of the largest in the chain of Kuril Islands stretching from northern Japan to the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. This quick-forming ice was captured by NASA's Earth Observing-1 satellite and carved into swirling patterns by strong winds.
