Ridiculously high-tech toys turn every kid into Jack Bauer
Back in the day playing spy meant talking really loud into your pretend video watch and using jump ropes to catch your foe by the toe. In 2011, spy play is elevated to a whole other level, with video recording gear and even fancy listening devices.
It's not meant for James Bond, however — it's being geared toward eight year olds savvy enough to use the equipment and even download their surreptitious footage to a computer via USB.

The SpyNet video watch can record video, audio and still pictures with or without the subjectâs knowledge. It even has night vision. Yes, the watch can capture up to 20 minutes of full video in a completely dark room with an infrared camera, and it was freakishly clear video for a kidâs toy. Worse still, thereâs also a SnakeCam attachment allows an extended wire with a standard video camera at the tip to slink under doorways, rest in button holes or around corners for secret recon. To Do: install lock on bedroom doors.
Next is the Audio Bug, a two-inch mechanical bug that's actually a voice-activated audio recorder. Leave this baby in your sibling's room and once they start blabbing, the bug turns on and starts recording everything. For a kid, it makes snooping eerily easy.
For those that relish their inner sanctum, thereâs a door alarm, complete with swipeable key card that can attach to your bedroom door and hinge. Once the alarm is key engaged, anytime the door is opened a loud siren goes off alerting there is an intruder.
Stepping up that technology is the Bionic Ear, which uses real ultrasound technology to listen through materials relatively clearly. A Jakks representative put her iPod on the lowest volume inside a thick glass jar and then placed the ear bug on top of the glass. Through ear buds attached to the listening bug, we listened to the song clearly enough to recognize the tune. Gulp!
Anywhere else in the house, the Laser Tripwire allows you to set up an actual laser field. Using a laser and mirrors, kids can create a trip wire field up to 100 feet long that alarm activates once something breaches the laser beam. We suggest you get your pets training in suspension reconnaissance, stat.
Last but not least are the Video Recording Glasses, which hide a video camera on the bridge that can record 20 minutes of video, a bit like the watch, but without the fancy night vision.
