Google's payment system for digital content aims to best Apple's

Just yesterday, Apple's announcement of a subscription system for iPhones and iPads caused a stir in the publishing community based on Apple's demand for a 30% cut of all revenues. Now, Google's come out with a plan that should make those publishers a little happier.

Google's new payment system, called Google One Pass, is designed to allow publishers to easily charge for subscriptions or one-off articles. The subscriptions would work across devices, from phones to tablets to computers, and it makes it easy for publishers to, say, give out free digital subscriptions along with print subscriptions. And they'll only take a 10% cut.

The plan is right up publisher's alleys, but will they bite knowing that it won't ever work with Apple's mobile devices?
