Backup cameras are a luxury at the moment, requiring a little camera on the back of your car and a screen in the dash. But if the government has their way, you'll find them in every new car produced before too long.
The Transportation Department today offered up some new requirements that would improve safety in cars by the 2014 model year. Included in those requirements is one saying manufacturers must instal rear-mounted video cameras and in-vehicle displays.
It's not set in stone yet, however. There's a public comment period before being made final next year. Unless anyone has any major objections, however, expect for said cameras to become the norm.
