What's going on here, you ask? Well, apparently, this operational research vessel is supposed to do this.
The R/P FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform), or Flip ship, has been around since 1962. Still hard at work, this 355-foot-long vessel keeps track of weather data. Designed to partially flood, the R/P FLIP resembles a ship mid-capsize when it's busy studying waves and water density. It pitches backwards at a 90 degree angle, the bulkheads become floors, and voila, you have your very own open ocean research ship.
