Sophisticated wavemaking machine creates pictures in water

Japan's National Maritime Research Institute has developed a machine that can manipulate the shape of water so precisely that you would be forgiven for thinking you're looking at CGI effects from James Cameron's The Abyss.

During a recent demonstration to the media, the machine, originally designed as a water-safety device, easily changes the shape of water into a heart, a star, and even a musical note. Sure, it's probably not good for much other than a cool party trick, but what a cool party trick! You can see video of the amazing water dynamic here.
