HP Slate officially alive, ditching Windows 7 for Palm WebOS

It's hard not to feel a little robbed by HP's Slate. It was supposed to be the tablet computer to answer Apple's tablet toy, but turns out toys are pretty popular. Directly related or not, HP floundered in the wake of the iPad, but it's back with the Slate once more.

Not all is as it was, however. HP is tapping freshly acquired Palm to provide a version of the company's WebOS for use with the Slate, meaning no more Windows 7. That makes Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer's first unveiling of the Slate back at the beginning of this year (pictured above) more than a little awkward.

Further details are scarce at this point, though we can't help but get a little excited at the idea of WebOS being tailored for a tablet. The iPad is fun to use, sure, but it's hard not to think of it as just a larger interface for the iPhone's operating system. We want something really built from the ground up.
