Ziggy the Combot is a powerful, badass robot. In the lab, it can consistently boot a football a whopping 60 yards, farther than almost any human can kick. But in the real world, against a real NFL kicker? It came up short.

That's because unlike in a lab, where the bot kicked from concrete, on a grass field a significant portion of its energy was sent down into the softer ground rather than into the ball. That gave 49ers kicker Joe Nedney the edge.
