Video: we're wallowing in an electromagnetic jungle

As you watch these paper clips dancing on the floor of a Japanese commuter train, just stop and think for a minute about all the electromagnetic radiation swirling around you. The magnetism demonstrated here is caused by the electric current driving the motors located directly under the train's floor.

Japanese commuters on the Kobe New Transit Company's Rokko Liner: don't fret. The company's installing extra shielding so that electric train won't delete everything on your hard drive, ruin your credit card or break your cellphone. What would happen if it were a maglev train?

Kinda makes you wonder whether the same thing is going on elsewhere. Until you find out, next time you go electric training, you might want to consider keeping that laptop where it belongs — on your lap. Don't forget to wear that tinfoil hat.
