Palm Pre to be available on D-Day, June 6

Get out of the way Apple, because here comes the Palm Pre, officially available on June 6 for $199.99. That's an aggressive date for the new phone to go on sale, just two days before Apple's annual coming-out party, the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8, which was originally thought to be the day a new iPhone would be announced.

Besides being a shot across Apple's bow, it's also ominously warlike, with June 6 being otherwise known as D-Day way back in 1944. It's also a Saturday, kind of a strange time to roll out a new product, unless you're hoping buyers will be waiting in long lines for it, and won't need to take time off work to do so.

The phone's sole provider will be Sprint, and besides being sold at that company's stores, it'll also be available at RadioShack, Best Buy, and some Wal-Marts. We're digging this new phone, which looks to us like the first serious buzz-stealer from the holy iPhone. It's about time.
