Bamboo bike frame offers a wooden ride

Fast-growing bamboo seems to be the current material of choice for many green-thinking designs, so it was just a matter of time before someone came up with a bamboo bike frame. While I don't think the world's landfills are getting clogged up with steel bikes, most of the alloys used do contain some pretty nasty stuff like chromium and molybdenum.

Designer Arndt Menke's Holzweg (German for wood way) frame uses bamboo for all of the main structural tubes, and even incorporates a suspension by splitting the wood on the seat stays. Just how durable and stiff the Holzweg would be is hard to say, although with no brakes or gears, this prototype looks like it's ready for the track or NYC messenger duty.
