Star Trek in LEGO: 15 unearthly designs
Friday, May 8, 2009 - 4:14am
You can make almost anything out of a pile of LEGO bricks. Lucky for us, plenty of LEGO fans are also in love with Star Trek, and they're not afraid to boldly go where no other LEGO playsets have gone before.
We had just three rules for finding the creations: it had to be from the Star Trek universe, be hand-built (as opposed to the many computer generated LEGO ships out there), and it had to be awesome.

1. Classic Enterprise
I'd be remiss if I didn't kick off this list with Dave and John Xandegar's venerable NCC-1701 USS Enterprise. Here's a view of the back:
2. Next Gen Enterprise
For TNG fans like LEGOsmith Kevin and myself (related only by first name), there's no substitute for the Enterprise-D. Nice detail on the nacelles:
3. Kapla!
Of course, it isn't a party unless the Klingons show up. This battlecruiser by John Harms' comes pretty close to the real deal.
4. Resistance (to love) is futile
Everyone's favorite cyborg villains were a lot scarier before Mike Crowley gussied up their cube. Check out the interior of the "Love Shak" below:
5. Locutus of LEGO
Patrick Yrizarry's "Legcutus" of Borg may not be too happy to see you, though.
6. Cardassians Galor(e)
Even those head-ridged Cardassians get some love from LEGO enthusiast Arka. Bonus points if you know which side is the front of this Galor-class cruiser:
7. Shuttle spotlight
Small and boxy, it's a shuttle from TOS by Unitron6991. Then there's Uni's TNG shuttle.
Stewart Park also took a stab at it, beefing it up a bit and making it look a bit like an ambulance:
8. Warbird
Spencer Dickson's Romulan Warbird turned out pretty well. He nailed the trademark "wings" of the vessel:
9. Voyager
Let's get back to the Federation. Sven Junga's Voyager even has the shuttle bay fully modeled.
10. Split Defiant
Even cooler is Junga's Defiant, which splits in two to reveal a mock-up of the ship's decks.
Look close — he even modeled the warp drive:
11. Triple Prometheus
The crème de la crème of Junga's collection is the USS Prometheus, which splits apart into not two, but three different sections:
12. Classic miniatures
"Mini-figs" are pretty popular among Star Trek LEGO enthusiasts. Here's a Romulan Bird of Prey and and the NCC-1701 by Brandon Griffith.
13. More miniatures
Ben Smith's mini-figs are a fine example of using as few LEGOs as possible while still capturing the shape and color of the vessel. His
14. Even crazier miniatures
Chris Deck's collection of mini-figs is pretty complete, with ships you won't see in too many other LEGO collections. Up above is a Daedalus-class vessel, with an
He's also assembled the odd duck of the Federation, the one-nacelle Freedom-class:
The Klingons may not appreciate it, but Deck's Bird of Prey is adorable:
15. Vulcan beauty
Of course, no Star Trek LEGO list would be complete with Jon Walker's "Surak Mk. II," which is fashioned after a Vulcan vessel seen in Star Trek: Enterprise. Let's take a closer look at that ring:
Seriously, this thing might as well be a movie prop:
Last one, I promise:
I lied:
