Every image has a sound: how sound design works

Did you get your fill of cool commercials during the Super Bowl? You don't think much about the soundtracks and sound effects while you're watching, but a Brazilian company's demo reel on YouTube perfectly sums up how much an image is enhanced by sound. Most folks don't realize that in those computer-generated commercials, every single sound has to be recreated, often just like how it's done in the above video. Need a bonfire sound? Get your mic out and start crinkling some wax paper.
Check out the Coke Heist commercial — every insect footstep and wing flap had to be recreated by an audio engineer. I happen to do that for a living, and it's nice to see such a simple, visual explanation of what's involved.
