Although it looks like a slightly yellower version of the Xbox 360, Alen Corp.'s Paralda Air Purifier is a much, much greener gadget than Microsoft's power-sucking game console. First off, it's said to be the only air purifier to get thumbs-ups from both EnergyStar and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) as a green product, meaning it's energy efficient and is completely lead-free.
Filtering away troublesome bacteria, pollen and mold, the Paralda has a UV lamp that will last from three to five years and very simple controls up top. Swapping out HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters is as easy as loading videotapes in a VCR, done via the auto-closing door. The high style factor is a bonus. A bonus you pay for, though — the Paralda's $499 price will unfortunately keep it out of all but the chicest of homes. At least it looks the part.
