Magnificent 1,474-megapixel inauguration panorama, a photo for the ages

Look at what happens when ace photographer David Bergman stiches together 220 images, taken with the help of a Gigapan robotic camera mount. It's a 1,474-megapixel shot of the presidential inauguration, and if you're willing to wait a few minutes for the image to download, you can use the online viewer to zoom in on everything and everybody.

See if you can spot former President Carter, or see what brand of camera crane was used, or notice how one of the TV cameramen also set up a small tripod with his own point-and-shoot camera, or catch Yo Yo Ma snapping a picture with his iPhone.

Besides being a toy, this huge image will be of interest to historians centuries from now. Who knows which future celeb might be spotted? An ominous past example of a similar concept: John Wilkes Booth appearing in a photo of Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural.
