Samsung is dropping a new 70-inch, full-HD LCD TV on Korea, and it's got a new feature called Local Dimming Technology. What is that, you ask? Well, it's an LED-backlit TV, much like the new MacBook Pros, and in order to get blacks as deep and dark as possible, the TV turns off the backlighting in select areas when necessary, making the blacks that much darker. They say this gets the contrast ratio up to a relatively bananas 500,000:1.
Even better, the LED backlighting is so efficient that it cuts power consumption by 50%, making this TV not only friendly on your eyes but friendly to the earth as well. And while there have been bigger TVs shown off at trade shows, as of now this 70-incher is the biggest commercially available TV in Korea, which gives Samsung bragging rights for the week or so until Sharp releases a 72-incher.
