'Plastic' blood could be used in a pinch

Scientists have developed a synthetic, "plastic" blood substitute that could be used in emergency situations when real blood isn't available. Lightweight and able to be stored at warm temperatures, the fake blood would be much easier to transport than the real thing, so people like soldiers could keep it on hand for when it was needed.

Made from plastic molecules with an iron atom at their core, the fake blood would be able to carry oxygen through the circulatory system just like real blood. It's unclear as to whether or not this blood substitute would be healthy for the body in the long term, but if you've already lost a lot of the real thing I'm sure you'd be happy to take a few pints of this rather than getting nothing at all.
