Network speeds to get big boost in coming years

With everyone all psyched about downloading HD movies and CD-quality music and all that jazz, our trusty Ethernet cables are starting to look like they might not be up to the task. We want to be able to download multiple gigs of data in seconds, not minutes or hours! We are a society on the move, with places to go and people to see! Time is money!

Well, the IEEE, or "Big Group of Nerds" as the consortium is officially known, has announced that they are standardizing the next generation of Ethernet connectivity to much zippier speeds — 100 Gpbs, to be exact. While those blistering speeds won't be around for a while, it's nice to know that the sights are being set pretty high on this project. The group thinks it'll take until 2009 or 2010 to get the infrastructure upgraded everywhere so speeds like that possible, but damn if that won't make downloading media a much less painful experience.
